Frequently Asked Questions

OUT OF GAME THINGS (Role Playing, Messages, etc.)

What is Role Play?
Role playing is when you play the role of a character who is not yourself. RavenBlack Blood (RBB) is an online computer game that is fun on its own, but the game has a great deal more texture when used as a platform for Role Playing. This is called an RPG, or Role Playing Game.
How do I role play?
Within the game when you are in a square with another vampire, you can click on the "more commands" link at the bottom of the game screen. One of the options is to type in a line of text which is used to "speak" to everyone else in the square with you. This will cost everyone who converses using this method an Action Point for each exchange. Many RBB players communicate with each other during game play by using one of the instant message programs available through Netscape, Yahoo, or some other program. The official IM service for the Abbadon House is AOL Instant Messenger. You can download AOL IM from Netscape without actually being an AOL member.

The most commonly used IM service for most vampires, however, is YIM (Yahoo Instant Messenger, due to the prevelence of Yahoo Groups as information dissemination stations). The URL for getting YIM ishttp://messenger.yahoo.com/

Once you have installed YIM or you have AOL IM features enabled, you should create buddy lists of groups of vampires--your House Brethren, affiliated clan members, or even enemies to know when they are online.

Another way to role play is to use one or more of the Yahoo groups mentioned above which are dedicated to Ravenblack players. There is a group for the Abbadon Bloodline, through which only members of our House will communicate. There are many others, including the Ravenblack Blood Group, the Freedom Trade Alliance, and so on.

When making posts on one of these groups, it is VERY imporant to observe the ettiquette of that lists posting rules. When making a post as your character, it is useful to post like this:

IC: "keethrax, I will make you die a thousand deaths for stealing my coins!"
Abbadon,
Master of the House of Abbadon

The above post used the abbreviation for In Character (IC) and signed the message with a Vampire Name. It is clear that this is role playing.

When posting a non-character question--(In Real Life, or IRL)--you should format like this:

OOC: I can't seem to log in to the game today, is the site down?
TR.

In the above case a technical question was asked by the player (or the vampire Abbadon's human) and opened with the signal for Out Of Character (OOC) and was signed by using the player's real initials.

Posting like this avoids all confusion regarding what is role playing and what is discussion of the game.

I know things my character doesn't, how do I deal with that?
One of the fun things about role playing is exactly this challenge, keeping your player and character knowledge seperate. The better role player you are the more you will be able to do this, and making sure that you delineate in your posting technique what is IC and OOC is the best way to practice this. Never make a threat to a person's character while you are OOC, and certainly never let your character insult a person's player. To the character the player doesn't even exist.
What is a House?
A "House" is essentially the bloodline extending from the Master Vampire. The House Membership includes all the vampires in that family, including childer and siblings.
What's the difference between a House and a Clan?
Clans are similar to Houses, except that many houses might make up a clan. Clans are large alliances of vampires, something like vampire nations. Many clans are organized around shared ideals--such as evil, theft, or the destruction of other types of vampires they don't particularly care for.

For more information on clans, visit: Clan FAQs

What are the clans?
There are lots of clans, with new ones forming all the time. For a list visit: Clan List.

There is a database for clans at: Clan Database.

Am I already a member of a House or a Clan?
If you were sired by Hans Abbadon, or by one of the vampires in his blood line, you are a member of the Abbadon House. This bloodline functions similar to a clan, and demands clan like allegience, however members of the bloodline are also free to join clans outside the bloodline. To join a clan you must be offered membership or apply for membership.
What is the Capadocian Dynasty?
Very often rival clans will go to war. After the last great clan war the Capadocian Dynasty emerged as the dominant clan in the City, and has dedicated itself to bringing peace through the absorbtion or elimination of all other clans.
I've been zeroed, now what do I do?
When a vampire is zeroed, the traditional response is to take a 30 rest period where you feed on nothing but Humans for blood points, and make no attacks against other vampires. The rest period is declared by announcing through the Yahoo message board groups, and if you are not a member, the announcement can be made by a superior member of the House who is. If you break the traditional rest period by attacking or drinking from another vampire you will invoke reprisals from the House, whose honor you will have tarnished.
