How do I play?
The best way to learn how to play is by playing, however, you can get a lot of information at the How To Play page at the actual game site.

You can also find a lot of answers to basic question at the FAQ and News pages. Try to find the asnwer to your question there before asking on a message board or via email. We'll try to answer other questions on this page.

What are POWERS?
Some Vampires have special Powers (either as a thank-you for donating to the server costs, or acquired somehow in the City). The available powers are as follows:
  • Celerity (3 Levels Available): the Vampire's action points normally recharge once every 30 minutes. Each level of Celerity reduces this by 5 minutes.
  • Suction: the Vampire extracts an extra pint of blood from each victim, at no extra cost.
  • Surprise: the Vampire can enter a square that would usually be considered overcrowded.
  • Stamina (3 Levels Available): the Vampire usually has a 50 Action Point maximum. Each level of Stamina increases this by 10. Stamina also affords extra resistance against some attacks.
  • Shadows (3 Levels Available): Vampires usually disappear from sight if they don't move for 4 days. For each level of Shadows, a Vampire disappears one day sooner. Locate (3 Levels Available): Using Locate, you can find out where a Vampire is. At level one you can only tell distance; at level two you can tell distance and direction; at level three you can tell exact location. Uses one action point per target. Used from the "More Commands" screen.
  • Thievery (3 Levels Available): At level one, up to 25% of the target's money can be stolen; 50% at level two, 75% at level three. Higher levels also have their chance of failure decreased. A 'rob' option appears next to the usual 'drink' option if you have this power.
  • Second-sight (available only to donating Vampires (at least $5), as it increases server load): the Vampire can examine the statistics of other Vampires. Uses half an action point per target. Used by clicking on the name of the target vampire.

How do I get powers?
You must find them. Certain guilds train you to recieve the powers. The guilds change all the time, but a friendly Barman might tell you where they are. Beware, though, they cost a lot and often will require you to go on a quest. For full details on powers (and a lot of other usefule information) it is recommended you join the Freedom Trade Alliance, a Yahoo group. In the files section there you will find full details including which guilds offer the power, how much they cost, and so on.
What is a quest?
A quest is a timed undertaking inside the game that you have to accomplish before being given the power. You can find full details on various quests HERE.

Here is some good advice for questing:

  1. Keep most of your quest money in the bank unless you've got enough AP to get to the next stop. Don't carry it around with you for all stops on the quest! If you've got at least Th(2), so you *may* not need ANY of it.

  2. Telport scrolls = good; transits = bad

  3. Maps that tell you how far it is from point A to point B are GOOD! Remember that you've can only *count* on 72 hours to get there. Don't get sidetracked by feeding on Humans along the way.

  4. Before you begin, try to have as many AP as possible (less what it's going to take you to get from the nearest bank to the guild). If you arrive at the next pub before your deadline, hang around a bit letting your AP inch up a bit. It'll help for next time since you never know when you'll get a 160+ journey!

I went to a Guild to get a power, but why wouldn't the Guildmaster send me on a quest?
There might be a lot of reasons, for instance, if you were already on a quest for a different power a guildmaster will not send you on a new quest. As a side note, though, if you are on a quest for a power and you come across a guild which offers powers for cash only transactions, you can pick those up on your way.
Is there a simpler way to get a power?
You can also get powers by making a donation to offset bandwidth costs of The City. This is explained here:How do I donate?
What power should I get first?
A good power to concentrate on aquiring first is Thievery (1) because without it it will be very difficult to acquire enough coins to quickly buy any of the other powers. Concentrating on all 3 levels of Thievery first will put you in a good position to gain other powers more quickly...but be careful who you rob, creating enemies while still new to the game can be dangerous to your health. As a side note, at each of the Thievery guilds you can also obtain a level of Shadows. If you decide not to get shadows and then change your mind later, you will have to go back to the thievery guilds to obtain them, so it might be a good idea to aquire your Shadows powers as you work to obtain each level of Theivery.

It is also strongly recommended to attain all three levels of Stamina as early as possible--since all that theiving is likely to gain you an enemy or two. With all three levels of Stamina you will have the best protection from attacks with artifacts like Scrolls of Turning.

Besides powers, what else can I buy?
You can buy drinks at pubs, and if you buy expensive drinks the barman might give you information, such as where shops are located. At shops, you can find and buy "artifacts", including:
  1. Holy Water (2000 coins) - Takes off a high percentage of blood from the target vampire
  2. The Scroll of Turning (500 coins) - Unblocks the squares that are full and does minimal damage to each person in the square
  3. The Scroll of Teleportation (2000 coins) - Teleports your vampire to another part of the city.

Where do I get money from?
When you drink from humans, you also get their money. Also, once you have the power of Thievery, you may rob other vampires.
How do I keep my money from being stolen?
The only way to keep your money safe is to deposit it in a bank. All branches of banks in the city are connected, and you can deposit or withdraw your money in any of them.
I am trying to figure out where some of my BP went. Can a vampire bite you with out you knowing it?
Vamps can bite you but take no more than 1 bp (more if they have suction, but not much more) per bite, and can't attack you again until after you move. For this reason, bites from other vampires are more of a nuisance than a threat. You will only be told once about any attack, when you log on at the top of the screen will be info about things that happened to your character while you were logged off:

(so and so) stole 15 coins from you
(so and so) drank 2 pints of blood
(so and so) said "Thanks for the coins."

This information goes away when you refresh or move from one square to another. If you want to keep track of who has drained or robbed you, you'll need to do it before you do anything else.

I've been attacked and lost a lot of blood, how did that happen?
Scrolls and potions will do BP damage to you, which can eventually result in your being "zeroed" at no BP at all. When this happens you will have to rest for a very long time.

Holy Water takes off a certain percentage of a vampires BP's. Attacks with HW are normally carried out first to drag the target down to below 1000 BP's where Scrolls of Turning are then used to remove 10 BP's at a time. Note: a vampire with Stamina can resist a lot of attacks forcing the attacking vampires to waste lots of HW's and SoT's plus having to go to magic shops to reload.

Attacks come because you have in some way run afoul of another vampire with these items who decided you should be attacked. Let the House know of this attack, and if you know, who did the attacking. It is possible the House may be able to take action against an uprovoked or undeserved attack you you.

If you have offended an enemy to a very great extent, they may try to keep you at zero because it doesn't take much effort to babysit you and keep up attacks which will keep you below 50 in blood. Such attacks are usually only initiated during clan warfare, but you never know whom you might upset by robbery or through role playing on one of the message boards.

If you've been attacked, either by having a large amount of coins stolen or large amounts of blood drained, report the attack and all information regarding the attack to your Sire, who will forward the information up the line. It is possible that if a member of the same clan has attacked you, you could get your money back. if an attack has been made by an ememy of the House or Dynasty, the House or the Dynasty will take action.

Well, is there any way to get my BP back?
You can get blood points back by feeding on more victims, buying blood from a pub, or by visiting a Necromancer.
What are necromancers?
Necromancers let you buy one pint of blood for 25 coins.

Shops in the city which sell potions (IE: Holy Water) will have a Necromancer. [note: some players have said that *only* potion/apothecary shops (i.e. those that sell HW *only*, not all-in-one shops) have resident necromancers.]

You can buy up to 100 BP less than your highest BP level. (e.g. if you had 2500 BP and were the target of several dozen HW attacks, you could go to a shop that sells HW and buy back up to 2400). This works on all BP lost, not just what the HW took off, too. If you had only lost 800 to HW, but another 150 in scrolls of turning and 8 more from bites, you could still buy back up to 2400.

This works if you have paid BP for Stamina as well. If you just got Stamina 1, 2, and 3 (which includes a cost of 500+1000+1500 BP). You could go to a necromancer and buy 2900 of that back from him.

Necromancers will never heal you past 100 LESS than your maximum blood level attained.

I signed into the Game site this morning...and found that 3 Vamps left me a message.....here it is..."GmbH says "Check-point" GmbH kneels on the ground, and gently tears open a wrist with a daggerlike fingernail. Blood flows forth, and half-seeps, half-crawls into the paved ground." This vamp and two others said the same thing...what does that mean?
Just ignore it. The messages weren't left specifically for anyone. Such messages are left when somone acquires a power in that square.
