"With one word, a federal judge has described not only John Ashcroft's handling of the Department of Justice, but also the Bush administration's policy of citing national security as the reason why it's trying to hide the Constitution from Americans.
After 9/11 criticism of the President caused journalists to be fired, teachers cesured, bookstores vanalized, publication threatened with attack, and certain TV programs, songs, comic strips were blacklisted, and public questioning of U.S. foreign policy would often get the questioner excoriated, charged with treason, communism, atheism, sodomy, and even menaced physically.
- A.J. Brown, a student in North Carolina, was questioned for two hours in her dorm by Secret Service agents because she had a poster critical of the President on her dorm room wall.
- Barry Reingold, sixty, had two FBI agents arrive at his door because someone at his gym overheard him criticizing the President. (He'd said out loud: "He is the servant of the big oil companies, and his only interest in the Middle East is oil.")
